Understanding Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Daily Calorie Targets
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) represents the number of calories your body needs to maintain basic life-sustaining functions (like breathing, blood circulation, and cell production) while at complete rest. Understanding your BMR is essential for planning effective weight management strategies.
Calculating BMR Using the Harris-Benedict Formula
Our calculator utilizes the revised Harris-Benedict equation to estimate BMR:
- Men:
BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 * weight in kg) + (4.799 * height in cm) - (5.677 * age in years) - Women:
BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 * weight in kg) + (3.098 * height in cm) - (4.330 * age in years)
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)
To determine your actual daily calorie needs, your BMR is multiplied by an activity multiplier (ranging from sedentary to extra active). This calculates your **TDEE** (Total Daily Energy Expenditure):
- Weight Maintenance: Eat calories equal to your TDEE.
- Weight Loss: Consume calories below your TDEE (typically a 500-calorie deficit).
- Weight Gain: Consume calories above your TDEE (typically a 300 to 500-calorie surplus).
